    Middle Tennessee Penn Staters,
    Let's Get Excited for THON!

    THON Weekend is February 18-20

    Hello Nashville Penn Staters!

Tradition.  Legacy.  Service.  The Penn State community prides itself on these components of character central to our Nittany Lion education both in and out of the classroom.  Year after year, Penn State students and Alumni pack into Beaver Stadium to cheer our beloved football team to another victorious season.  Just as football continues to bring the Penn State community together, so does THON each and every February as students and Alumni alike cheer on the dancers and volunteers.

The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately referred to as THON, is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world!  THON is a year-long fundraising effort that culminates in a 46 hour no sitting, no sleeping, dance maraTHON in the Bryce Jordan Center. THON has 15,000 student volunteers, 700 dancers, and has raised more than $69 million, benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Children’s Hospital in the quest to cure pediatric cancer.

As alumni, we can do our part to contribute to THON!  Here are some ways you can get involved:

    • Joining the Dance Marathon Alumni Interest Group (DMAIG), a group of alumni that continue to volunteer for THON.  Registration is free!  More information can be found at DMAIG.org.  You can donate directly through this website.  There is also a list of events relating to THON on the site.
    • Requesting donations from friends and family through THONline Fundraising and/or Corporate Matching.
    • Extending the passion behind individual giving to companies interested in pairing with THON
    • Writing motivating Dancer Mail for the students and alumni dancing in THON 2011.  General cards with inspiring words are due by February 10, 2011 and can be sent to:
      Attn: Mail Call
      210 HUB
      University Park, PA 16802

These are great ways for us to get involved as a Chapter!  THON weekend is February 18-20.  We could have a fun day making dancer mail within the next few weeks!  If any alumni are interested in making dancer mail or going up to Penn State for THON, please contact me at jd.honeytree@gmail.com

Here is hoping that everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving! It is always great to stop and reflect on what we are thankful for in our lives. And who doesn't like the food!

I know that the Nittany Lions are thankful that Michigan State has never won in State College since Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1993!  However, I will recommend that JoePa and team watch out for the fake punt or the fake field goal by Michigan State as they have used that successfully this year.
As this is the last regular season game of the year, if you are in the area this weekend, please join your fellow alumni and fans at Dan McGuinness Irish Pub in Nashville for our weekly viewing party.   Game time is 11:00am Central Time.

There is free parking across the street in the empty lot or in the Off Broadway Shoe parking lot in the back part of the lot. We will be outside on the patio and the game will be shown inside as well. The patio will be non-smoking during our game and families/all ages are welcome. There will be a beer special during the game - a bucket of 5 Domestic beers for $15!

We will hold a raffle at half time for Penn State items.  All the proceeds from the raffle will be going to the scholarship fund. All the more reason to participate!

A reminder to all who need to renew your Chapter memberships - you can easily renew online at our website, www.nashvillepennstaters.com, or at the game. This year, all who join or renew will receive a custom designed sport gray Nashville Penn Staters tee shirt.

Our Chapter supports the Penn State Alumni Association, so if you would like information on joining there is a link on our website for that as well.

    See you Saturday!

    400 WINS!

That’s more victories than any Division I football coach ever has had before or likely ever will ever again achieve. And this milestone for College Hall of Fame Coach Joe Paterno was made possible by the Nittany Lions’ thrilling 35-21 comeback victory over Northwestern in front of 104,147 fans in Beaver Stadium and a nationwide ABC/ESPN2 audience. Those of us that were at the viewing party had an awesome time cheering loud enough so everyone in Beaver Stadium could here us!

This week we turn our attention to the 8 -1 Ohio State Buckeyes. Please join your fellow alumni and fans at Dan McGuinness Irish Pub in Nashville for our weekly viewing party.   Game time is 2:30pm Central Time.

Please join your fellow Penn Staters to cheer on our team. Game time is 2:30pm Central Time.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - ESPN's popular College GameDay Built by the Home Depot program, with host Chris Fowler and analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard, will originate from the Penn State-Alabama clash on Saturday, Sept. 11 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The No. 19/14 Nittany Lions and No. 1 Crimson Tide are meeting for the first time since 1990. The contest between the national powers and old rivals will kick at 7:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. CT in Bryant-Denny Stadium and air on ESPN, the Penn State Sports Network and www.GoPSUsports.com.

College GameDay begins every Saturday at 9 a.m. on ESPNU and moves to ESPN from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. ET. The GameDay crew will be on ESPN and ABC with other live segments throughout the day. The public is invited to attend.

College GameDay on ESPN Radio also will originate from the Penn State-Alabama game, with coverage from 12:00-7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN Radio affiliates across the nation. Ryen Russillo is the host, with analysts Trevor Matich and Brad Edwards. This year marks the 17th consecutive season College GameDay Built by the Home Depot is originating from the site of the day's biggest game. Fowler, Corso and Herbstreit are in their 15th season together on College GameDay.

Saturday's broadcast marks the sixth time College GameDay has originated from a Penn State game in the past six seasons. The program was in Happy Valley for the 2005 and 2007 Ohio State contests and the 2009 Iowa game. College GameDay also originated from Penn State's games at Michigan State (2005) and Ohio State (2008) since 2005, with the Nittany Lions winning the Big Ten Championship and a BCS berth both years.

In addition, College GameDay originated from Penn State for the 1999 Pigskin Classic against Arizona and the 1997 game against Michigan.

Coach Joe Paterno's squad opened the season with a 44-14 win over Youngstown State on Saturday. Quarterback Rob Bolden (Orchard Lake, Mich.) delivered the best passing game by a Nittany Lion starting freshman with his 20 of 29, 239-yard effort, including two scoring strikes to senior wideout Brett Brackett (Lawrenceville, N.J). A senior co-captain, Brackett set career-highs with eight catches for 98 yards, including 20 and 22-yard touchdown catches.

The 2009 BCS national champion, Alabama opened the season with a 48-3 win over San Jose State on Saturday.

Penn State and Alabama will be meeting for the 14th time, but the first time since the Nittany Lions earned a 9-0 win in Tuscaloosa in 1990. The Crimson Tide lead the series, 8-5. The teams played every year from 1981-90, preceded by three bowl game meetings all decided by seven points (1959 Liberty, 1975 Sugar, 1979 Sugar).
