We Are... Supporting Good Causes
THON | PENN STATE IFC/PANHELLENIC DANCE MARATHON
THON is a student-run philanthropy committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer. Their mission is to provide emotional and financial support, spread awareness and ensure funding for critical research - all in pursuit of a cure. Since 1977, THON has raised more than $127 million benefiting Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children's hospital.
The Middle TN Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association supports this cause in various ways such as:
- Creating mail to encourage dancers
- Gathering donated toys and other fun items to raise dancers' and children's spirits
- Raising money specific to this cause
SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK OF MIDDLE TN
Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle TN opened its doors in 1978 with the purpose of providing a central distribution center for companies, groups and individuals who wished to help provide food for hungry people in the area. Today, Second Harvest is one of the largest and most comprehensive of over 200 food banks and food distribution centers nationwide. During the 2009-2010 fiscal year, the organization distributed more than 53.3 million pounds of food to hungry families across Middle TN.
The Middle TN Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association has been supporting this cause for over five years. The chapter shows its support in various ways such as:
- Collecting canned and packaged goods at nearly all of its chapter events
- Volunteering about twice a year as a group to process and package donated items
